Reliance Jio introduces new tariffs for JioPhone users; offers 1GB with free calls at Rs 49

Reliance Jio Infocomm (Jio) has brought in the industry’s lowest price plan for a 28-day validity, especially for its JioPhone users, in a bid to propel the sale of the 4G feature phones and add to its 160 million user base against an aggressive rival, Airtel, which has matched most of the new entrant’s offerings.

Starting January 26, a JioPhone customer can get 1GB data at ₹49 with a validity of 28 days, with voice free for life, the Mukesh Ambani-owned telco said on Thursday. This will be the lowest price plan a telco is offering in the industry, keeping the data amount and validity period in mind.

“Tariffs charged for feature phone users continue to be exorbitant, while their smartphone counterparts on Jio enjoy free voice calls and high speed data at the most affordable tariffs,” Jio said in a statement.

Till now, the entry point for JioPhone users was the ₹153 plan wherein a customer would get 1.5 GB of data for 28 days.

“The high featurephone tariffs make it impossible for them to even think of using data, let alone avail advanced data services like video calling, mobile video and mobile applications. Jio has made data affordable for everyone,” the company statement added. The operator has also introduced add-on sachets for ₹11, ₹21, ₹51and ₹101.

The JioPhone, which was launched by sister company Reliance Retail, comes for a ₹1,500 deposit, refundable after three years on return of the device. To avail the refund, one needs to recharge for a minimum ₹1,500 a year. Under the new plan, a JioPhone user would need to top up the minimum monthly charge of ₹49 with additional amounts to reach the ₹1,500 annual recharge figure, if he wants to avail of the full refund. Part refunds are also allowed for those surrendering the device earlier.

The latest price move will further intensify competition with incumbents who are offering cashback offers on their alliances with smartphones. Recently Idea, Vodafone and Airtel announced cashback offers on their 4G smartphones, which brings down the effective price of the devices to under ₹1,000.
